Plain Jane vs Super City a short story eBook Paul K Swardstrom Will Swardstrom
If you're a fan of superhero movies, as I am, you've probably seen dozens of epic battle scenes where vehicles go flying through the air, buildings crumble, bridges collapse, and bystanders caught in the middle run back and forth looking for a safe place to hide.But... what if you're a busy working mom, and you HAVE NO TIME FOR THIS NONSENSE?
That's the premise for this story, and it's one that had me grinning all the way through. Heroine Janie is determined to let *nothing* stop her in her quest to get home in time for dinner -- not battling people in spandex, not crumbling buildings, not mysterious, sticky green bubbles. She's a stand-in for all the working moms of the world, doing her best to ignore everyone else's drama, because it's her family that comes first. I loved this great, fun little read, particularly since it brought to mind all the times I've struggled my way through the crowds in big cities. Thumbs up to the Swardstrom brothers for another terrific story!

Plain Jane vs Super City a short story eBook Paul K Swardstrom Will Swardstrom Reviews
Fun quick read. Interesting spin on Janie being a hotbox runner as she maneuvered through the city to get home. Looking forward to their next endeavor.
A story of a mother who is in the midst of commuting home from work to fulfill her responsibility of taking care of her two young children and husband. But life has other plans as a series of superhero fights break out, upending her routine and threatening to get in the way of her arrival home. However, she will not be deterred from her mission. Driven and determined to get home by any means possible, she embarks on a series of increasingly dangerous challenges, from damaged public transportation to wanton vehicular destruction amidst the superhero conflict. Told from an engaging and refreshing down-to-earth perspective of a civilian in the middle of larger-than-life chaos, we are anxious to see whether she has a chance to survive.
I originally read this short story when it was titled "Hotbox Runner" and published in The Powers That Be A Superhero Collection, an anthology filled with many more great superhero stories just like this one. =)
What makes this story unique and ultimately so refreshing is the very clever hook at the end. And that ending is set up well from the very beginning. Very enjoyable, easy to read. Recommended!
This short story is so much fun to read. I often wondered about the civilians in a Super Hero battle. I enjoyed how the supers are the undertone to Janie’s determination. A great adventure of non-stop thrills.
I love superheros, that is a fact... This takes a delightful twist to one of those stories... It's told from the POV of a mother just trying to get home to her kids... She's caught in the heart of the battle... Dodging buses broken buildings and the whatnot... Get this book and get caught up in this epic battle!
Superheroes and supervillains battling it out in the streets of Galeburgh is nothing new, and Janie Walter is just trying to get home to her family. With single-minded determination she fights her way through no fewer than three battles threatening the major metropolis… and that’s just the beginning. By flipping the "epic battle" trope on its head, Paul and Will Swardstrom have given us a fun and interesting story with a neat little twist that’s well worth the price of admission.
Will Swardstrom has multiplied, and the result is a fantastic, fun little read. Great to see both brothers writing engaging tales!
In every super hero movie I've ever seen, the, ahem, superheros are always the umm heroes. But what about all the innocent bystanders running around through crumbling buildings, earthquakes, and telephone pole fights? Well, Hotbox Runner follows one such bystander, and it was very refreshing to see a story told from this point of view.
The story is virtually non-stop action from front to back, and it kept me guessing as to how it would all end. As it was, there is a hint of a twist at the end, and that to me was what brought it all together. Plus, the last line about family gave me shivers! Well done, Swardstrom brothers. Where do you get all your creativity?
